About the Artist

Tom Ehlers, a quiet, but very personable artisan, grew up working in the construction field with his father. During his high school and college days, Tom worked the summers doing concrete flatwork and landscaping. His ultimate career goal was to be an architect or so he planned.

Tom has always been interested in doing artistic creations with concrete. With his foundation of knowledge of concrete and surrounded by artistic friends, Tom learned to make his first rubber mold of a simple clay carving. From there, using his artistc and concrete construction background, he started his company- Stone Effects. His focus has been making architectural and garden elements of the medium he knows so well.

For over 18 years, Tom has made a living doing what he loves. Starting with the concept on the drawing board, creating the model, making the mold and casting the piece in concrete. Over the years, Tom has made over 300 molds of his original designs, architectural finds and artist -friend's creations.

Since beginning his company, Stone Effects, Tom has worked with builders, architects, interior designers and renovators in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. His work has been shipped across the United States as well. Tom developed his own concrete mix which uses Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GFRC). This mix is manufactured to withstand the harshest weather conditions. Using integral colors, various stains and textures, his cast concrete has the style of weathered Old World carved stone.

Tom's primary focus at this time is on landscape and garden sculpture. Recently selling many of his larger architectural molds so he can focus on creating plaques, keystones, corbels, tiles, statuary, finiales, medallions, masks, leaves and other various garden pieces.

In 2002, Tom was asked, by his father-in-law, to create a tombstone to mark his grave. He honored those wishes and has since designed and custom made several other monuments to represent someone's life in cast stone. This has proven to be particularly dear to Tom and he finds the work very rewarding. Tom enjoys doing custom designs and is happy to work with you to design something to your specifications and desires.
